Things that made me smile recently... and things that mde me frown:
Smile: Lindsay Buckingham on Soundstage right now!
Frown: WMU in a rather odd scheme to decrease their heating costs has decided to delay the beginning on the Jan-April '06 term for a week. Though I guess thats more of a eyebrow raised in question rather than a true frown.
Smile: Going to the Apple Oarchard with Angel Marie Hughes! For the 5th year in a row, the weather has been positively beautiful, and I could have been comfortable in a t-shirt. The only downside was that the bees were out in full force because of the warmth. Angel said that she felt a little out of her comfort zone, surrounded by my preschoolers and going on her first hayride ever! It was pulled by a tractor, but now Angel is really eager to ride a horse for the first time.
Frown: The fact that there is now a toothbrush with an on-board computer that will tell you when you've brushed for 2 minutes, and will let you know when you need to replace the brush head. Like there was some great crowd of people out there thinking, "Gee, I wish that there was some way for me to figure out if I was brushing my teeth for long enough. I think my teeth are clean, but how can I know for sure? If only someone could create some device for the measurement of time. Something handy that would be small enough to be easily contained in a room as small as a bathroom!"
Smile: Going out to Kraftbrau with Stacie and the 'rents the other night and seeing Belfast Gin and Millish. I was really impressed wtih both groups, and I'm a little bit surprised that Stacie hasn't mentioned it on her blog as one more random Friday night example. Not only was her friend Derek there, but he is going to be performing with Belfast Gin in a little less than a month, and Stacie has hung out with the lead singer at a party of Derek's. Random. It was fairly corwded so we had to sit at the bar, but finally got a table once Millish took the stage. I was really impressed with them; Tyler Duncan- the Uillean pipe and bodhran player was really impressive. He also played the saxaphone and he transferred some elements of Jazz Sax into some of the pieces he composed for the pipes in a way that I had never heard before Really impressive. They also did one of the most innovative covers of Bohemian Rhapsody that I had ever heard. I later went to their website and was even more impressed. It turns out that the guys in the band have won numerous international awards, been on Emmy winning CDs, and are all about 20 or 21. Scary good.
Frown: One of the fathers at my school recently went to Menards (or one of those places) and bought a box of Rags- to clean any odds and ends while they moved into their new house, and found an envolope filled with a mysterious white powder, and what they describe as 2 sides of a page written in Arabic. They called the Sherrif who contacted the FBI. The Feds came to their house, confiscated the envelope and have taken it to be analized. Also, all of that product has been pulled from the shelves. This happened on Sunday night, and I was told of it on Monday. That night at dinner, Amy, the mom of the family began to be violently ill and went to the hospital for a Spinal Tap to see if she had anthrax. I don't know much of the rest, and I guess the FBI hasn't told them much eaither, but blessedly Amy has gotten somewhat better, and her pixie of a daughter, Abby, is not as worried emotionally as she was at teh beginning of the week. Her anxiety came out in restlesness at nap time, a sudden fixation on her clothing tags itching her and just a general crabbiness that is very unlike her usual cheerfulness.
Smile: A comment Angel made to me recently. I was talking about how I'm getting better than I was about being uptight, or about worrying too much about things. Her reply: " If you have to say that you are doing better, it just shows how bad you were to begin with."
